– The walking challenge was successfully completed between December 2013 and April 2014 –
Laps Completed: 500
Laps to Go: 0
Hello and welcome to the Coral Sea Islands – My name is Matt and I work as a weather observer at the Willis Island Meteorological Office. I’m stationed here for a 6 month posting between October 2013 and April 2014.
My home is Sydney, Australia and while on the island I have decided to give the money I am not paying towards rent to charities. I’m hoping to generate awareness in the wider community by walking 500 laps of the island during my free time. For the five 100-lap segments I will dedicate that money to a different charity.
Some things to know:
- Willis Island is small, remote and desert island-like in appearance. It’s about 450 meters long by 150 meters wide and has a population of 4. Each lap will be about 1.2 km (0.7 miles) in length.
- Progress, photos and stories will be recorded and updated regularly. Maps and statistics about the walk will also be made available using the Google Track app.
- I won’t be collecting any money from others however I would encourage donations to any of the featured charities or to elsewhere which may have a special meaning to you, if you’re able to do so.
The charities I’ve chosen have significance to me and I’m thrilled to be able to help in a small way. If you’d like to help out in spreading awareness about the work these organisations do please feel free to share their links with your colleagues, friends and family.
On that note, I’d better do up my shoelaces, apply the sunscreen, pack some water and get to walking!
